pr_mencs_kyle_busch_073017 Victory has proven elusive for Kyle Busch. So have wins in general for the 2015 champion. The Overton’s 400 Sunday changed all that.

Check off one more track for one of the most talented drivers of our generation. Winning in 2017 and winning at Pocono was bound to come eventually. Now Rowdy has one more track left he has not yet conquered. Care to guess? Well, if you’re a serious fan, then you know that only Charlotte remains.

As we’ve said before, it was just a matter of time. Though wins have been hard to come by, Kyle Busch has been in the mix every week. The same can be said for Joe Gibbs Racing. More will no doubt follow. The showdown for the championship this year could shape up to be the Kyle, Kevin and Truex show.

Speaking of Kevin Harvick, did you momentarily wince as the 18 made contact with the 4 at Pocono? There has been a history of bad blood between these two black hats, so one couldn’t help but wonder if there wouldn’t be more bumber banging to follow. It wasn’t to be had. Harvick admitted his troubles in that spot at that time were of his own making, so he let one of his chief arch rivals off the hook.

Hey, is that, are you Clint Bowyer? Well, well, well. He lives. The Kansans “Road To Relevance” tour continues to make progress. To make the playoffs, Bowyer will have to continue to make progress, as 14 drivers can now boast of winning. After Sunday’s festivities at Pocono, Bowyer finds himself well inside the playoff bubble in 10th. There’s still plenty of racing left, before the dust settles. Bowyer will need to continue to race at a high level, but it’s got to feel nice to put the struggles of the past further behind him.

The competition is tightening up to fill out the playoff picture. Chase Elliott, Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray will be tough customers, but none are bulletproof. Joey Logano has a win, but it’s “encumbered,” so he’s still got work to do. Bowyer’s chances are decent. The next several weeks could prove quite intriguing.

Talk about intriguing, it will be interesting to see what the road course at Watkins Glen will hold in store in terms of its place in playoff competition. Bowyer is a pretty fair road racer, so is Jamie Mac. Then, one can never count out AJ Allmendinger, who has made quite a name for himself on courses of right and left turns.
